Description
A small kestrel sits perched on a sign near the road at Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge. This area has a 4 mile driving tour route through the slough. Birds that frequent the refuge are used to the cars, and because people stay inside their cars, they tend to come closer than they would otherwise.
Kestrels are small raptors that are found throughout most of the contiguous United States, with their breeding ground extending up into Canada. They eat mostly insects, but will eat small animals and birds. (My mom gets these by her birdfeeder sometimes.)
Isn't he pretty?
