Description
The Coquille River Lighthouse near Bandon, Oregon was built in 1895 and abandoned in 1929, when the Coast Guard assumed responsibility for the lighthouse and decided that it was no longer needed due to a recent addition of a fog bell that was placed on the south jetty. In 1963 area became Bullard's Beach State Park, and the lighthouse, which had fallen into disrepair and was frequented by vandals, came under park management. Through a joint restoration operation between the park and the Corps of Engineers, work began to restore the lighthouse in 1976. Work was completed, and the historic structure was opened to the public in 1979.
